At that point, he was honest with himself and admitted that he had wronged his father and was not worthy of his father’s love. He took responsibility for his actions and admitted his wrongdoing, which is a necessary step to having an “Aha” moment.

Prayer is not just a request list for God. Prayer is an opportunity to converse with the God of the universe. It’s a chance to align our heart to where he’s leading. Text: James 5:13-20

96% of all people will marry in their lifetime. How does one have the marriage God intends?  In the context of marriage, God says that a husband and wife are to “submit” to one another. Is this misogynistic team, a relic from a male-dominate ancient culture, or a call for a husband and wife to build a marriage based on mutual humility and care? This sermon further breaks down Ephesians 5, and what it truly means to “submit” to one another out of reverence for Christ.

The call to biblical community is a call beyond ourselves. Hospitality is not just a good idea, it’s a call from the scriptures to live our the grace that’s been shown to us by Jesus. Each week, we have opportunities to do so, both as an individual and as part of a church.

Jesus shares a parable in Matthew 18 about forgiveness. The parable exposes some of the biggest misconceptions we have about what God has in mind when it comes to forgiveness. Living out God’s idea of forgiveness has the ability to create a new stories: ones of redemption and reconciliation. What does it mean to be a forgiving person?

The charge to “live in harmony with one another” takes place on the backdrop of tension. As a Christian, the tension of both disagreements and differing worldviews make life challenging both inside and outside the church. Harmony is less about universalism, and more about allowing Christ’s love to lead us to increased humility as we seek to share the love of Christ with the world. Text: Romans 12:9-17

The Samaritan Women’s  mission is to promote Health, Healing, and Hope in some of the most desperate and dark situations. So here’s the story on Feed 500: A few years ago, Revolution conducted a Community Needs and Assets Assessment in Annapolis.  We found that hunger is a big problem in our city, particularly for children.  So we asked ourselves how can we help?  The answer was very simple… make as many people aware of the need as we could, buy as much food as we could, and deliver the food to the hungry families.  Last Christmas Revolution delivered a week’s worth of meals to 400 families, the year before that we delivered a week’s worth of food to 100 families.  So, this is our third year now partnering with the Department of Social Services in Anne Arundel County, local churches, and individuals to help provide food for families at one of the greatest times of need.  We would like to ask you to join us!

This year on the 17th of December Revolution in conjunction with area churches and individuals will be delivering a week of food to 500 families in our area.  It only costs $30 to feed a family of four for a week.  If you would like to participate by donating to feed families, or by delivering food, or by doing both click the link below.

The Process:

Feed 500 – December 17th 2011 – Logistic

The phrase “one another” appears frequently through the scriptures. More than a  call to be “nice” to other, the “One Anothers” of the Bible remind us that the way that we engage our neighbors is ultimately a reflection of our faith in Christ.

In Galatians 6, Paul calls the Galatian church to “carry” one another burdens. This “carrying” involves taking off our masks, and committing to a journey of repentance.  In doing so, we will be pictures of restoration.

Jesus wants to free us from the worship of religion. Sounds contradictory, doesn’t it? What if the point of Christianity wasn’t to create good morals and “Chrisitans?” Jesus calls us beyond the false belief that the answer to life is just more “old time religion.”

God wants to free us from the idolatry of “happiness.” Is this because God doesn’t love, us, or because God loves us enough to free us from worshiping the a myriad of temporary  things that only can create short-term happiness? Through Ecclesiastes 2, Solomon’s pursuit of happiness exposes the difference between happiness and joy, and pushes his readers to know that the pursuit of the heart of God is where the difference is found.

When good things become god things, it’s a bad thing. This fact is perhaps best expressed the worship of love and sex. This sermon discusses the idea that the openness to love and sex in our culture does not express greater freedom, but instead greater entrapment to the notions of being filled by love and sex. Jesus does not desire something “from” us, but hopes for something “for” us. (John 4, Genesis 2, 1 Cor 6)

god(s)- a being or object believed to have more than natural attributes and powers and to require human worship;specifically : one controlling a particular aspect or part of reality.

Ultimately, there are many things people put hope in that were never meant to feel the weight of such worship. Misplaced worship is responsible for a bulk of our struggles against sin.

Therefore,  who would have thought that one little word could change the purpose of every person on the face of planet earth.  In this two week series we will be exploring the implications of Matthew 28:18-20 for our lives.  When we clearly understand what Jesus is saying about himself in this passage it changes everything for the rest of our lives.  Come explore this simple word that Jesus spoke over 2000 years ago and how it still changes lives today.

Matthew 28:18-20

Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. ¹⁹ Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in^[a] the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, ²⁰ and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.

David’s life is coming to an end. On his deathbed, he anoints Solomon as his successor.  David  gives a charge to Solomon, speaking his last words, chronologically speaking, recorded in  scripture. What David reveals to Solomon on his deathbed reveal much of what it means to be a “man after God’s own heart.”

2 Samuel 16:1-13 – Shimei, a member of Saul’s lineage, curses David. His resentment towards David has lasted for almost two decades, and projects it at David. Upon realizing that he is danger for his actions, Shimei falls at the feet of David. King David, rather than putting him to death, shows him grace. Later on, at the end of his life, we find out that King David never really got over the anger he felt toward Shimei.

Wounds can be easily infected by resentment. However, most of our resentment and bitterness eats at the soul of the person that has been wounded.

How do we take action when we’ve been wronged? How do we protect ourselves from being swallowed by bitterness?

Below you will find all of the elements that we typically include in our worship service.  In order to get the full Revolution experience be sure to grab a cup of coffee and a comfy chair as you are getting ready to come to church!  Now, just scroll down, read, and click play to go to church this morning!

In preparation for this service we would encourage you to grab some communion supplies (juice or a liquid of some kind and bread or crackers – it isn’t important what you use just that you have something.  The elements remind us of the sacrifice.  There is nothing special about using grape juice and small wafers).  You will also need a bible.  If you don’t have one just click here to go to an online bible.

Next, gather the family/ roommates / friends that got trapped at your house / or just yourself around the computer and get ready to worship God!  It may feel a little weird to sing along with songs as they are being played on youtube but remember that just like on a normal Sunday the band and all of the things that we do to make the room feel worshipful are really just tools.  These videos are just tools to help us focus on and sing worship to God.

Have someone say a prayer for the morning.  Thank God for the ability to worship Him this morning.  Thank Him for your safety and ask Him to take care of everyone who has been affected by Hurricane Irene.

Even David, “TheMan After God’s Own Heart,” experiences failures. Chapters 11-12 are perhaps the most scandalous piece of David’s life. David commits adultery, then murder as he attempts to save face.   Ironically, David’s attempt to be “free” to make his own  decisions made him a slave to graveness of his sin.

After a year of hiding what he’s done, he’s confronted with the sin he’s committed.

How does David respond to being confronted with sin? When we learn that Jesus’ desire was to redeem us from the penalty of our sins, how do we respond to God ?

Mephibosheth, Jonathan’s son, faces two dangers in David’s kingdom. First, as a surviving heir of Saul, he has a claim to David’s throne. In some kingdoms, this would surely mean his death. Additionally, Mephibsosheth has a physical disability, which makes him an outcast in the culture of his time.

2 Samuel 9 paints a picture of a different kingdom. David does more than tolerate Mephibosheth; he invites him into his presence. As a body of believers, the church is called to reflect the “kindness of God.” This kindness is much more than being nice to people in traffic; in fact, it completely changes the way that we view and treat others.

We’ve heard promises all our lives…from parents to politicians. Many of these promises never pan out the way we were told they would.  We’ve made promises to others that, in our heart, we never intended to keep. Thus, many of us find it difficult to trust a God who makes promises to us.

Thankfully, God takes promises much more seriously than we do. In 2 Samuel 7, God makes a covenant with David.  This covenant demonstrates that God has more in mind for his promises than what we could ask or imagine.

The saga between  King Saul and David  is coming to an end. Saul will now see the death that he has continually tried to bring to David. David, after years spent on the run, will now attain the kingship he was promised by God. David’s response to Saul’s death has much to say about how Christians should view the death of others; specifically, those who are our enemies. Additionally, Saul’s desire “to play the fool” says much about our standing before God.

David is on the run, seeking to escape from the clutches of King Saul. As an opportunity arises for the hunted David to become the hunter of Saul, David responds in a way that is surprising. What does David’s refusal to kill Saul say about the Lord’s annointed King? How does one practice discernment biblically? How does one think exegetically instead of topically?

We all have roles to play in our lives: we’re employees, wives, moms, bosses, bargain hunters, friends, fashionistas, gardeners, you name it. These roles shape our view of who we are. But what does it mean to be the new person that God describes in the Bible? What does it mean to be “found” in Christ?

Join us October 14-16 for “The New You: Finding Your Identity in Christ,” our first-ever Revolution Women’s Retreat. It’s an opportunity to grow in your relationship with God, to put all the things that demand your time and attention on hold for a while, and to spend the weekend focused on learning more about God. It’s also one of the best venues to grow in friendships with other women at Revolution.  Whether you’ve been at Revolution for a while or you’re just starting out, this retreat is for you.

Where:  Rehoboth Beach, DE.  We’ll be staying in a beautiful, large ocean block, villa-by-the-sea named “Memories.” This villa has a roof- top deck, gorgeous ocean view, recreation room, pool, and hot tub. This villa is very large with 14 bedrooms, 9 full bathrooms, multiple living rooms and kitchenettes, and a very large great room that will accommodate everyone at once.

How much:  The cost to attend this women’s retreat is $150. A non-refundable $50 deposit is due when you sign up, with the remaining $100 due by September 25. This cost includes the two nights at the beach house, three sessions with a guest speaker, and four meals (Sat. breakfast, Sat. dinner, Sun. breakfast, and Sun. lunch).

After slaying the Giant, David finds increasing tension from Saul. As  KingSaul plots to end David’s path to the throne, David finds help from Jonathan, Saul’s son. The covenant between David and Jonathan has much to say about what it means to live in community.

1 Samuel 17 is the account of David and Goliath. While the story is well known and well-referenced, it is often viewed through the wrong eyes. What if Goliath wasn’t the real giant in the story? How does seeing the text through this lens help us approach the “giants” we face today?

What does it mean to wait well?  In a time of David’s life where he lives in the tension between the promise of God and receiving that promise, we look at how David waits well.

In week six of “TRANSFORMED,” Josh Burnett shares how the resurrection of Jesus transforms how we view the people around us.

This June, a small team of volunteers from Revolution Annapolis traveled to Port-au-Prince, Haiti to aid a group of missionaries operating a church-sponsored orphanage within the city.  While in Haiti, this team stayed at Maison de Lumiere—or, “The Lighthouse”—where they provided much-needed relief for day-to-day operational activities, organizing and hosting events for the roughly 40 orphans currently staying at Maison de Lumiere, and, for three days of the week, opening the doors of the orphanage to the thousands of poor and starving children of Port-au-Prince.  With God’s help, they were able to help the staff at the orphanage construct an additional building to be used for housing, meeting, and educational space for the boys and girls living at the orphanage.

Although Maison de Lumiere was founded and began operating years before the devastating events of January 2010, the effects of that disaster are still palpable in the nation’s capital.  In a country where the vast majority of children are born into abject poverty, the effect of losing working family members and/or the homes they lived in was devastating.  Haiti is currently home to more than half a million orphans, and another 300,000 children in the country are owned and trafficked as human slaves.  Since the earthquake, the demands on Maison de Lumiere have been immense, and it was the team’s goal that, for at least one week, they could minister to these people (and to these children) in a way that not only reveals God’s love, but also extends it in a miraculous way!

I AM THE CHURCH:

The word “Church” brings an image to mind. For some, thoughts turn to a beautiful, ornate building in the center of town. For others, words like “hypocritical” or “irrelevant” come to mind. In Part 1 of our new series “I am Revolution,” called “I AM THE CHURCH,” Josh Burnett helps establish the relationship between Christ and his Bride, “the Church.”

We believe that there are two powerful influences on this planet that were initiated by God: The Church and the Family. Rather than running parallel as two separate influences, our desire at Revolution is to see the influence of the church and the family combine in the lives of the children.

We believe that what will matter most in 100 years is that our kids had an authentic relationship with Jesus. This hope drives the focus, strategy, and intention of the environments we are creating each week for your children, as well as the ways that we communicate with you.

Just as there are no perfect churches, we know that there are no perfect families. Our desire is to partner with you as a parent, no matter where you think you are spiritually, to impact your family.

So what does it mean to be church for people who don’t like church?

We get that question a lot… basically what it means is this:  if you are a person who has been to church in the past and not enjoyed it because you didn’t feel like you fit in, then we think you might like Revolution.  If you are a person who has been hurt by the church, rejected by the church, or has never been to church because of what you have heard about it… then we think you might like Revolution.

Revolution is a church where you can be you.  There is no dress code.  There is no secret handshake in order to fit in.  And there are no perfect people allowed.  In fact, Revolution is made up of people who have questions and doubts.  We like to say that Revolution is a safe place to ask the hard questions about God and faith.  Being a part of the community at Revolution isn’t contingent on believing the right things or even knowing what you believe.  We accept everyone for who they are.

A commonly asked question:

Are we anti-church?  No.  In fact, we are glad that there are many different churches, because we realize that different people connect to God in different ways.

At Revolution we are all about Jesus.  Everything we do is modeled after how Jesus lived his life on earth.  We believe that through coming to know and follow Jesus that we find the best possible life.  Our goal is to model our church and our lives as individuals after Jesus.

Revolution has no dress code, no secret handshakes, and no perfect people allowed!

Maybe it’s been a while since you went to church, or maybe you never did the whole church thing.  Either way, our hope is that you will love Revolution.  Sunday mornings at Revolution are designed to be a safe place to come explore God and faith.  Our dress code is: whatever is comfortable (but please wear something!).  Our music is amped, genuine, and will most likely be what you find yourself singing in the shower on Monday morning.  We are a mobile church, which just means that we meet at Loews Annapolis Hotel not far from the heart of the city.  We have a safe, secure, and fun environment for kids birth through 5th grade.

The Holy Spirit: We believe that the Holy Spirit is co-equal with God the Father and God the Son. The Holy Spirit lives inside every Christian and prompts Christians to live the best possible life.

People: We believe that humans (both male and female) were made in the image of God. We believe that God has invested his image and glory into humans and therefore we are His prize creation. Just as God exists in relationship with himself, He created humans with the intention to be in relationship with both Himself and with each other.

The Bible: We believe that the Bible is God’s message to human kind. It was written by human hands under the inspiration of God. Because it is inspired by God, it is truth without any mixture of error. The Bible provides wisdom and connection to God. It is our constant at Revolution. It dictates what we teach and how we live.

The Gospel: As a theological term the gospel is simply the “good news”.  We believe that this “good news” is that: God loved you so much that he sent his son Jesus to die for your sins and conquer death. This is good news for everyone who chooses to make Jesus the Lord and Savior of their life – through the sacrificial death of Jesus you can have a never ending relationship with God.

Exploration/questions: We believe in questions. We understand that belief comes from asking and seeking answers to questions about God and faith. God is not afraid of our questions – in fact, He welcomes them. Throughout my life, I have spent a lot of time getting to know Jesus.  As I have been on this journey, I have come to see Him as the greatest revolutionary to ever live.  However, many people I meet have a different picture of Jesus all together.  Many see Him as high and lofty rather than relational.  Many people see Him as a politician trying to force them to vote a certain way.  Many even see Jesus as some hippie, making abstract statements about peace and love.

I see Jesus as a bold and passionate leader.  He lived in a way that made the religious people of his day shudder, and I think they would shudder today too.  I see a Jesus who loved people unconditionally, even when he didn’t approve of what they did.  I see a Jesus who cared for and looked after people; a compassionate Jesus who was constantly helping people (there is hardly a story about Him in which he isn’t helping someone).   I see a Jesus who was relational and who loved hanging out with people.  I see a Jesus with such radical teachings, that they got him killed. I see a Revolutionary.

I think the best part about Jesus is that the revolution didn’t die with the leader.  It spread and went wild.  While there have been those, past and present, to pervert and distort Jesus… His revolution lives on today.

Our goal in starting this church is to lead people into a revolutionary relationship with Jesus.  Our church is modeled after the way he lived: we want to serve people without reserve or judgment, we want to love each other the way Jesus loved his friends and followers, and we want to help people experience God.

So how do you see Jesus? Maybe it’s time for a different picture.

What will it be like?

You’ll meet friendly people. It’ll be a relaxed environment, where you’ll even have a chance to grab a cup of coffee, or tea (for those who like that sort of thing). Music that rocks. Safe, secure, and fun kids programing. Biblical teaching that is relevant to your life.

What should I wear?

Sunday Revolution is a relaxed and casual environment; we encourage you to wear what makes you comfortable. Most people will be in jeans and a t-shirt.

What if I don’t believe in God, am I still welcome?

Definitely! But we do hope you’re open to exploring, and to the idea that maybe there is a God and maybe He’s worth knowing.

Since I was seventeen I have been dreaming of starting a new church for people who don’t go to church. For the last ten years I have been dreaming of what Revolution would become. I believe that what the world really needs is not another church or church building but a community of people who follow Jesus’ example of living in community, demonstrating grace to everyone, and helping unleash the God given potential in people, communities, and the world. I am married to the most amazing woman alive (Sarah), and we have one beautiful adventurous daughter named Savannah.

I love hanging out with my family, meeting new people, being outside, rock climbing, fishing, watching movies, and just about anything that involves eating.

Matt Murphy – Worship Pastor

I am a musician who also loves spreadsheets. Yeah, I know it’s weird. Prior to coming to Revolution Annapolis, I was the small groups director of a church in Fredericksburg, VA, where I also played bass and guitar in the worship band. I have played music in a variety of bands and have had the opportunity to record two full-length records and two E.P.’s of original music. My goal for Revolution is to bring music that is relevant and resonant with the goal of bringing people to a place of authentic, primal worship.

I am fortunate to be the husband of Becky, the father of Ariella and the owner of two dogs, Dizzy and Buddy. I love reading books, watching movies and playing ukulele on my front porch.

Scott Ancarrow – Church Planter In Residence

I grew up in Smithsburg, MD, am a long-suffering Orioles fan, and drink way too much coffee. I once wore the Maryland flag as a cape; when I did, the Ravens won the Super Bowl. Perhaps I should do this more often?

I have a passion for useless trivia, and am intrigued by history. I love to read, but I’m usually the last guy to read something that everyone else has. Along the way, I play my music at volumes that tend to annoy others. Maybe it’s because I wanted to be Axl Rose as a kid. Hey, red headed role models are few and far between…

I have been married to my wonderful wife Amber since 2003. We have two daughters, Emery (4) and Reese (2). Our family’s long-term desire is to see many new, gospel-centered churches planted in the Baltimore/Washington area.

OUR CORE VALUES:

Creating Community – Revolution is all about relationships. As humans we were created and designed for community. It doesn’t matter who you are, what you drive, or even what you believe – we want you to get connected in community. We do our best to create environments that are safe and inviting to everyone and to be friendly and hospitable.

Demonstrating Grace – Jesus is the ultimate example of grace. When you experience his grace in your life it is contagious. Revolution is a community where we want grace to abound. It flows out of who we are to our neighborhoods, to our city, and to the world. We demonstrate grace by being active in our communities – socially, economically, recreationally, and spiritually. We want to be a community that is known for the grace that we experience and give away.

Unleashing Potential – We believe that every person is created in the image of God therefore, we believe that every single person has something to offer. We believe in calling out the potential we see in every person. We do this by encouraging people to discover and use their talents, skills, and gifts in every arena of life.

OUR CORE PROCESS:

Our core process is intentionally simple, and is designed to show you how to get connected and grow. It revolves around four unique steps or environments. These steps / environments are what we consider to be essential to relationship with God.

Explore – We believe getting to know God and developing a relationship with Him is essential. So we ask people to explore God and faith. Environmentally you can do this on Sunday mornings at Sunday Revolution. Personally you can also take the step of reading scripture and praying on a regular basis to get to know God better.

Connect - We value community. This comes from the belief that relationship with God is not just a one person thing. So we practice community as a step to growing closer to God and others. Environmentally this happens during the week by getting connected to one of our Local Revolutions.

Act - We believe that God has loved us so extremely that we can’t help but pay it forward. Environmentally this happens through the many different ways Revolution Serves the community. We believe in taking action in our communities as a church and as Local Revolutions.

Invest - We value leadership and investing in future leaders to become Revolution Leaders. We will always challenge people to find their place of leadership and service. As a step, this happens by getting involved in one of our service opportunities, a sunday morning team, or a Local Revolution. Beginning as a member of a team and then becoming an apprentice, then a leader, then a coach, and possibly ending with you coming on staff or going and starting a new church!

While the dream has grown, Revolution is still young.  We held our first Sunday service on 10.24.10. Until that time Revolutionaries were out serving the city of Annapolis.  Since that time Revolution has held services in the Lowes Hotel at 10:00 AM on Sunday. We chose to name our church Revolution because we believe the greatest revolutionary in all of human history is Jesus of Nazareth.  Who Jesus is can get distorted by his followers from time to time, but we believe that the revolution he started is the best revolution on the face of the planet. We believe that Jesus is the ultimate example of God’s love for every human being. We also believe that he showed us how to live the best possible life.

So, why isn’t “church” a part of our name? Two reasons. The word church has become so convoluted over the years that when most people hear the word they have an automatic response… here lets try it “CHURCH” how do you feel? Positive? Negative? Basically we just wanted to take that feeling out of the equation and allow people to make a decision about us based on what we do. In other words, watch us, serve with us, and see that we live what we believe. Jesus said that the world would know that we are his followers by our love. We want to demonstrate the love of God for people every day! And secondly, we believe that the church Jesus started should be, and in fact is a revolution! So in a way, Revolution is a better title for what we are.

Revolution loves Kids! From start to finish, we strive to make your time with us a great experience. Our safe and secure check in process allows for every parent to relax and enjoy our Sunday morning services. You will start by checking your child into our computerized check-in station. This will help ensure the security of your child. Then, one of our Revolution Kids host volunteers will walk you to where you drop off your child. Your child will be greeted and shown his or her room by one of our volunteers. All of our volunteers are background checked and trained to guarantee your child the best experience possible.

We seek to make this your child’s favorite day of the week, so we use skilled volunteers, technology, fun activities, and excellent environments to help build a foundation of faith in the life of each child. We believe this makes Revolution Kids a place your child will be begging you to bring them back to each week!

We divide our ministry into three separate environments so that we can engage your child at his or her level.

It’s important for you to know that, if for any reason, we need to get a hold of you during the worship experience, we will do so through a parent alert. Your child’s first and last initial along with the four digit code on your parent receipt will appear on the screens in the auditorium, letting you know that we need you for something.

The first delivery for the food co-op will take place on July 31st. For more information about serving the community with us or to purchase food at a reduced cost contact Josh – josh@revolutionannapolis.com.

Revolution has partnered with the Anne Arundel county schools to provide food to families in need. This time we’ve promised 100 Annapolis families that we will provide them with a weeks worth of food, which translates to feeding 400 people for a week!

How you can get involved:

Get Involved in the Packing and Delivery – On Saturday, June 26th we will meet at 8:30am at New Song Bible Fellowship (11911 Lanham Severn Road Bowie, MD 20720-4551) to pack and sort the food into boxes. We’ll load the truck with the boxes and head back to Annapolis.

For Delivery- We will arrive at a local area school (TBD) and will divide the boxes and put them into cars for delivery. We estimate our arrival on location with the box truck to be around 12pm.

Donate to the Cause – For $35 you can feed a family of 4 for an entire week, for $105 you could feed 12 people for a week.
